Health check for Dolphin Quay Footbridge

The Dolphin Quay Footbridge (also known as the Fathom Turn Footbridge) is due for a health check, and our team will begin a detailed inspection as part of a condition assessment next week.

This assessment is a way to check the structural health of the bridge, carried out proactively to give engineers an idea of its current condition and if any maintenance may be required in the future.

Carried out in two stages, the condition assessment will begin with a minor review focused mostly on external testing, followed by more advanced testing in the second stage.

When is this happening?

Work will be carried out in the following timeframes:

  • Stage 1 testingwindow:25 May - 5 July
  • Stage 2 testingwindow:20 July - 14 September

Will the bridge be closed during this time?

Residents may experience intermittent disruptions during the above windows, including short-term closures of the bridge (with disruptions to be expected on 25 - 26 May).

Signage will be in place during any disruptions. Please follow all directions on site and allow a little extra time when walking in the area.

What is a condition assessment?

This particular assessment is a Main Roads Level 3 Condition Assessment.

It’s a bit more in-depth than a routine inspection, and involves specialist testing and engineering analysis to ensure the bridge is in good health.

It helps engineers understand the current condition, and any hidden defects or deterioration of the bridge.

Why is it being carried out now?

The bridge now over 20 years old, and we want to plan ahead for repairs and extend its lifespan.

This will also create a baseline report to compare against future inspections.

Is there any concern for the bridge?

No, there is no concern for the health of the bridge.

It’s important to note this is a proactive, planned assessment, not a response to any risk.
